Temporary Anchorage Devices

TADsTemporary anchorage devices (TADs) are miniature screws that we position in the mouth to serve as anchors for moving specific teeth in the most controlled and predictable way possible. TADs are made of a sterile biologically compatible medical-grade titanium alloy.

TADs for orthodontic anchorage have become widely accepted and have enabled orthodontists to get results that may not have been accomplished with braces alone. Also TADs provide an option for patients that are smaller, more discrete, and more efficient than some of the current conventional appliances.

Where are TADs placed?

TAD's can be placed in many different sites in the mouth usually between or near the roots of the teeth. Placement is customized for each patient depending on what support is needed to correct the bite.

How is a TAD placed and does it hurt?

TADsPlacement is surprisingly non-invasive and often completed using only topical anaesthetic. TADs are inserted directly using a special instrument. There is little or no discomfort because there are no nerve endings in the bone tissue where TADs are placed.

The microimplant screw is removed when orthodontic treatment is completed. It takes less than a minute to remove it, and causes no pain.

How long will the TAD need to stay in place?

As the name implies, the anchorage device is temporary and is typically removed in a few months when it is no longer needed to assist in tooth movement.

Can TADs be used for patients at any age?

TADs are placed on patients who have permanent teeth. Patients with active periodontal (gum) disease may not be candidates for TADs. Typically, if required, they are placed in patients 10-12 years and older.

Although small, the TAD does a big job of helping us move your teeth predictably into their optimal positions. Contact us if you want to learn more about TADs and whether or not they are suitable for you to achieve the smile you have always wanted.
